Erwin Olaf

I have mentioned Erwin Olaf to many of you, and I would like you to look at his site. He is a fantastic Dutch artist who works as both a fine artist and a commercial photographer.

GUEST SPEAKER THIS MONDAY

Please feel free to attend David's class on Monday in the studio from 6-8. He is bringing in a guest speaker (Todd Wright) who is a local photographer. I know many of you have a class on Monday during that time, and I have cleared it with Jessica Cook so you can attend. She will allow you to come to class late, but in order to be excused, please SEND HER AN EMAIL to let her know you will be late. I hope to see you all there!

My concept is about multiples, and appearances, the cupcakes are just a material to represent this. I did not intend for this to be a food shoot.

assignment 2

Project 1 - David Thompson

Lighting Diagram

Please make sure you post your lighting diagram with your work! If you have already posted, you can just go to your original post and edit it, adding this in. I want to ensure that the images are in the same post as the diagram, so we don't have a lot of images and a lot of diagrams separated. The diagram can be downloaded from the blackboard page. Look in the "assignments" folder. Thanks!

Mike Byrne

I have abandoned my idea of trying to find an 'average' American as it just seems kinda stupid to even try and find such a person. So I'm just taking the opportunity to shoot some portraits. I do however want to choose my subjects carefully. Most people have something interesting in their lives that helps to define who they are, I hope to explore that.

Lighting is fairly simple in this one. If I could shoot it again I would use a slightly softer light source as the key light and barn doors for the rim light. I would also play around with the exposures. This was shot exactly as the meter said but I think there is some room for improvement. Highlights aren't great, original seems to be a stop under and the highlights blow out when I life them in PS.

Capture One Download/Tether cord information

This software enables you to shoot tethered to your computer: http://www.phaseone.com/Content/Downloads/CO4.aspx

This is a tether cord: http://www.staples.com/Belkin-10-Pro-Series-5-Pin-Mini-B-USB-Cable/product_372330?cmArea=SEARCH

If you have a laptop, start bringing it to class when you shoot and either buy a tether cord, so you can shoot straight to your computer, or bring your card reader, so when you are shooting you will be able to check your lighting in-detail. Many of your cameras show inaccurate information on the display. Checking your exposure and lighting set-up on your computer will ensure you have proper highlight and shadow detail.

Please learn how to talk about your work! You aren't going to have the backing of rich friends who are well-connected in the art world when you start out, like he did.

Lucky Three by Jem Cohen (starring Elliot Smith)

I mentioned this short film to a few of you in class tonight. There was a Jem Cohen retrospective last year in LA that I attended, and I can tell you now that I am hesitant to post this youtube version because it is such low quality. Jem's work is absolutely gorgeous, and I hope you will look him up on your own if this interests you. He shoots with a Bolex, and is a natural story teller and documentarian. You may have seen his film "Instrument" that he made for Fugazi a few years back. The library has a copy of "Lost Book Found," and I highly recommend watching it. This is nothing like the original, but it will give you a taste. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ADiSSNWU90&feature=player_embedded. You can view Jem's website here: http://www.jemcohenfilms.com/
